NSA Hall of Fame: Denny Helmig (2019)

CATEGORY: Meritorious

YEAR INDUCTED: 2019

The softball life of Dennis “Denny” Helmig began in 1970 and in 1972 the team he played with was sponsored by Steeele’s Automotive. In 1978 the team finished 5th in the ASA Major Nationals and after that season Denny started a company called Steele’s Sports. The company manufactured their 1st bat in 1979. That year the Steele’s team traveled throughout the country using the Steele’s bat.

In 1980 Dave Neale bought out Denny’s partner and the company continued to move forward. Denny sold his share of Steele’s in 1997 and that year became Vice President of Star Sports. In 1997, Denny left Star and went to work with Worth Sports, and that is where he has spent the last 22 years.

In 1982 Denny attended a meeting with a new softball association called NSA. The meeting with NSA was attended by Hugh Cantrell, Jack Roney, Bob Hildenbrand, and Denny. Steele’s then produced the NSA Skyhawk softball. Since that initial meeting in 1982, Denny has not missed a NSA Convention.

Denny and his wife Polly have twin girls Sara and Kara who both graduated from the University of Notre Dame.

On November 3, 2019, Denny Helmig was inducted into the NSA Sports Hall of Fame in the Meritorious Category.
