Leonard Winchester began umpiring as a volunteer in the ‘70’s and it did not take him long to know he enjoyed the role and soon began calling the plate. In 2000 Leonard was ask to be the UIC for events held in central Illinois and that was the starting point with NSA. In 2005 Leonard accepted the position as Umpire in Chief for Illinois Fast Pitch.
In 2003 and 2006 Leonard was recognized as the NSA Fast Pitch National Umpire on the Year (Caillouett Award) and only Leonard and one other umpire have won this award twice. In 2007 Leonard was named North/Central Zone UIC of the Year and in 2013 the Mike Coppinger National UIC of the Year was bestowed to Mr. Winchester. Leonard and his wife Barbara have two children (Becky and Anne)
On November 2, 2017, Leonard Winchester was inducted into the NSA Sports Hall of Fame in the Umpire Category.
